I have been working in the fencing industry since 1999 and have a lot of experience in most aspects of the fencing business. I started at the bottom as a Laborer and after a couple of years of showing I had the skills, I became a Lead Installer. Being a Lead Installer was great, I installed some jobs I look back on now that I’m very proud of. 2 years later I was promoted to work as a Contract Manager which I did for 11 years. It felt like quite a jump when I first moved into the office but after some time I learned what I needed to do and where I fitted in. Before the end of the 11 years I was Managing, I had run the company’s biggest job it had ever taken on, a Network rail contract, the fencing element from 52 stations in the Wessex area which had a starting order amount of £240k. The contract lasted 2 years, came to a final total of £760k due to extra works and as I was running the job I also applied for monthly payment. Through being completely thorough in the applications, giving the client exactly what was set out in the contract, creating good relationships with key people, holding my own in meetings with the client including obtaining legal advice on a couple of occasions, the client paid every penny of £760k. Something I’m quite proud of.
Recently I decided to give up my position and travel the world for a year. I was hungry for change and it turned out an excellent experience I encourage anyone to try. I volunteered with local families in many different countries all over the world as well as normal hostel traveling, I can’t tell you how great it was. You find out a lot about yourself when you embark on such a journey.
Currently, I’m now back installing fences again… and loving it. I’ve missed using my hands, there’s is a lot to be said about physical work. I don’t believe we’re meant to sit on our behinds in front of a computer all day or constantly driving from site to site, for me at least. The feeling you get after a hard days work, your tired body, when you can look back at the thing you have just constructed and say ‘I did that’. That feeling vs coming home with an exhausted brain after a stressful day in the office… I’ve missed it for a long time. The fencing game is not for everyone, its very physical, but currently, for me it is.
This is just a site about my current position in the fencing industry, to show what my capabilities are.
